We are very proud of how our children grow, develop and learn with us. For so many, learning to read, write and understand arithmetic is a major achievement against huge odds; barely even 50% of Syrian children in Lebanon are even able to access formal learning. Fewer still make it to the end of Grade 9 to take the Lebanese national ‘brevet’ exams because it is so hard for them to remain in education, for many reasons. Few options are realistically accessible to the refugees, and families are under huge pressure to have their children contribute to family earnings. It is estimated that only around 2% of Syrian young people even make it into secondary school.
We were therefore delighted to begin offering secondary/high school provision to our community in 2019. Our first pioneering cohort took their final exams in the Lebanese national system. We were thrilled that all of the group passed this demanding qualification, with 8 of them going on to secure places at university and the remaining student setting up a thriving business now employing other members of the community.
Thanks to our brilliant partnership with Jusoor, our students’ success stories continued in 2023, with 26 of the 30 students passing the exam. From this group, 13 are now studying at university, of which two of our amazing students won full scholarships from IIE, covering not just tuition but also living expenses for their time at university. Sadly, some of our leavers are unable to continue their studies simply due to lack of funds.
We are looking forward to celebrating the successes of the class of 2024 as they finish their time with us; we thrilled to know that two of our students have already secured full scholarships for their university degrees, hopefully with more to come!
Of course, finishing Grade 12 that does not mean that our wonderful young men and women leave our community – we are in regular contact with former students, some of whom have now joined our team as well; in this way, the Tuyoor family will continue to thrive, grow and serve our community.
