This appeal is especially addressed to the friends of Tuyoor Al-Amal (Birds of Peace) School, to concerned humanitarians and to everyone around the world who believes in our school’s vision of a better future for our children.
No doubt the first priority of every child is education; while many parents may brag about enrolling their children in elite private schools, what the children at the Tuyoor al-Amal School need are pencils, paper and a protective roof over their heads to shelter them and offer a secure educational environment.
It is increasingly obvious that Syrian refugees have been deliberately marginalized in Lebanon by the Lebanese government’s policies. Over the past three years, our children have been the hardest hit victims in the dizzy, crazy swirl of this dirty war
Just a brief idea about our school:
Tuyoor Al-Amal School was founded by a group of concerned Syrian refugees who wish to continue providing education for the children in their community. The school caters to pupils from Grades 1 – 8, offering education exclusively to displaced Syrian children who have suffered from the effects of the war in Syria. Tuyoor al-Amal, which is wholly non-political and non-religious, focuses on general education, offering Math, English, Science, Arabic, Religion, Art, and Physical Education. The school’s mission is to provide an educational experience that will give each and every student an opportunity to learn and also discover new passions for their future. In addition to an enriching education, each student will have the opportunity to receive individual therapy through various creative projects.
Over 650 kids had the opportunity to complete their study in Tuyoor Al-Amal School in two terms last year.
If it wasn't for some generous donors and some non-profit charities worldwide we wouldn't be able to offer this opportunity to our children and operate our school for free.
Although Tuyoor Al-Amal school team, the students and their parents would love to see our school completing in its next year, we are struggling to make that happen.
The following list itemizes our needs, with any donation, no matter how little, helping us to keep going and to keep making a crucial difference to already traumatized children’s lives:
Our needs are summarized by
1- Rent: The rent for the currently school building is US$2,000 per a month- $15,000 for the whole school year. As a result of unavoidable circumstances, we were forced to transfer last year to a new building in the same area; unlike the previous school building, this one provides 14 decent-sized classrooms, two offices, a science lab, and a large playground. Unfortunately, it is more expensive than the previous 10-classroom building, for which the annual rent was $10,000.
2- Transport ($3,190 per month): We have six bus drivers to transport the children to and from school. Three of these drivers are paid salaries of $600 per month, another is paid $550 per month and two are paid $840 per month ($14 per child, carrying 60 busloads between the two of them). We are currently obliged to ask the students’ parents to pay for this cost until we can find a sponsor to cover the transportation fees.
3- Teachers’ salaries: We employ 17 volunteer teachers, all Syrian refugees, who work on a voluntary basis but who are themselves in urgent need of a basic salary to cover their own basic living costs and help feed their own families.
Note: Last year we had 17 staff members in the school. Each staff member received a salary of $400 per month.
4- Books: We would like to be able to provide textbooks for all of Tuyoor al Amal School’s pupils, who currently have to share books.
5- Stationery: $3,500$ - $8.75 per student (Note: this amount is paid per term at the beginning of the school term, and includes pencils, notebooks, satchels, etc.)
6- Expenses: $300 per month. The total per month is an estimate based on monthly expenses, including utility and water bills, chalk, medicine, etc.
7- The most urgently important item on this list at present is the rental for the school building; we can't open the school without paying this sum. One possible idea is to introduce a basic tuition fee of $10 per a child, which will enable us to pay the rent for the next two months.
Unfortunately, the scarcity of charitable donors for schools like the Tuyoor al-Amal School has provided an opportunity for political and religious organizations with funding and their own agendas to become active in the educational field; as a result it is now difficult to find a school like ours without these unwelcome features, which are potentially dangerous in encouraging sectarianism and division.
